What are opportunity classes?

Opportunity classes are specifically designed to provide optimal learning conditions to support talent development of high potential and gifted students. These classes help students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, using specialised teaching methods and educational materials at the appropriate level.

The aim of Wilkins' OC classes is to provide very capable students with the chance to learn in an environment that suits their unique needs, with teachers who have experience and training in the area of gifted education. The students also learn alongside their peers from other mainstream classes, with an emphasis on collaborative learning and building strong friendships across the entire grade. The topics of work covered in an OC class allow students to work at their own level, study topics that are interesting to them and complete tasks that are suited to their ability. Students have the opportunity to accelerate and extend their learning and there is a strong focus on learning through problem-solving.

Wilkins’ OC teachers are experienced and highly skilled educators with significant successful experience as gifted education specialist teachers. They focus on fostering students’ self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation around high level challenges to ensure students demonstrate mastery of KLA skills and outcomes whilst working at a pace, depth and level of complexity that addresses their points of need.

Some of the programmes and activities available to OC students at Wilkins include the WriteOn creative writing competition, Night of the Notables, World Expo, Tournament of Minds, Game Changer Challenge, Maths Olympiad, and the Fort Street Primary Links programme.
