Chess

Wilkins offers a number of opportunities for children to be involved in chess.

Students can go along to Chess Club at certain lunchtimes, where they can play games against their friends and receive some guidance on how to improve their chess. On Fridays after school in Term 2, chess teams of four from Wilkins PS play against other schools in our area from the public, Catholic and private systems. Organised by the NSW Junior Chess League, the teams are graded Junior Rookie (for students up to Year 3), Rookie, Intermediate and Championship. At the end of Term 4 we hold our own Wilkins chess tournament for Stage 3, Stage 2 and Infants players. Chess Club and our chess tournament participation are organised by Mr Kinslor.

Sydney Academy of Chess

The Sydney Academy of Chess is a private organisation offering chess tuition to students in the Wilkins library for an hour before school on Mondays. There are two chess tutors, one who teaches novice players and the other who teaches the more confident chess students. The students spend time each session learning an aspect of chess before playing games against each other. Sydney Academy of Chess classes are $7 per time, paid each term.
